Meet Katie | Capital District Moms
Where are you originally from? How long have you lived in the Capital District?
I’m from the Capital District originally. My brothers and I grew up in Albany and our family moved to Delmar when I was fourteen.

How many children do you have and what are their ages?
My daughter is almost six months old.

Where is your favorite place to go out to dinner in the Capital District?
My husband and I love Druthers in Albany! We go there so much that I joke that we literally planned our wedding there over many dinners! It was also the first place we went for dinner as a family of three after our daughter was born!

What is one piece of advice that you would pass along to other moms?
Be kind to yourself and try not to worry about whether you are doing something the “right way.” It is hard work being a mom and I’m sure you are doing a great job!

How did you get involved with the Junior League of Albany?
One of my friends is a member of the Junior League of Albany and reached out to me since I had done a lot of volunteer work during college. The Junior League of Albany is a great way to give back to the community so I decided to join! Currently, I’m working with some of the other members to organize our biggest fundraiser of the year the “Touch-A-Truck Event.”

What is the mission of the Junior League of Albany?
“The Junior League of Albany is a member of the Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. We are an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.” http://www.juniorleaguealbany.org/about/mission/

What is the Touch-A-Truck Event?
Touch-A-Truck is a family fun day offering kids of all ages hands on experience with big trucks. There will be between 30-40 different vehicles that children and adults can touch, sit in, honk horns, and get to know the people who drive them.

Can you tell me a little bit more about the event?
There will also be a food truck, bounce houses and face painting! There is plenty of parking in the surrounding lots and there will be porta-potties on location. There is also around forty volunteers on the day of the event to help with everything! We are very grateful for the volunteers because we couldn’t do the event without them!

What happens if it rains?
We are a rain-or-shine event! We’ll make the best of it either way!

When and Where is the Touch-A-Truck Event?
Saturday, June 1, 2019 from 10am-3pm at the University at Albany.
We offer horn-free hours from 10am-12pm to help children who are sensitive to sounds feel more comfortable.

How long has the Touch a Truck Event been going on for?
This will be our 4th annual event!

Where do the vehicles come from for the event?
They are donated for the day by local businesses around the Capital Region! We work with many incredible sponsors and volunteers who donate their time, money, and vehicles to help make our day a success.

Where does the money go that is raised from the event?

All money raised from the event goes to helping support our mission. Our current areas of focus are poverty and hunger among women and children in the Capital Region. With the funds from last year, we were able to form a partnership with Capital Roots. “Capital Roots works to reduce the impact of poor nutrition on public health in New York’s Capital Region by organizing community gardens, providing healthy food access, offering nutritional and horticultural education for all ages and coordinating urban greening programs in Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady and Southern Saratoga Counties.” https://www.capitalroots.org/about-us/mission-and-history/
