Meet a Mom: Lindsay Ferrara, MS, RD, CDN | Capital District Moms

Where are you originally from? How long have you lived in the Capital District?

I have lived in the Capital District pretty much my entire life.  Born and raised in Glens Falls, my husband and I settled in Saratoga Springs because we love it here and it’s where his orthopedic practice is.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

We have 2 boys, ages 9 and 12 and a Cavapoo, Riley….ironically, they are all pretty selective eaters (yes, even the the dog).  My undergraduate degree is from SUNY Plattsburgh and my Master’s degree is from Sage Graduate School.  Our favorite pastimes are spending time on Lake George or biking the Warren County Bikeway during the summer months and skiing in the winter.  We love to travel and can not wait to safely fly again!

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I don’t love fruit, I might eat a banana or an orange maybe once a week.

What is your favorite place to take your kids in the Capital District?

Hands down, boating on Lake George, Blue Water Manor, island camping and the Glen Island Store.

How long have you been a dietitian?

I have been a dietitian since 2003, wow, I’m really dating myself.  I worked at Glens Falls Hospital for 10 years and have been the dietitian for Double H Ranch for the past 4 years. I launched my private practice, Pinnacle Nutrition, PLLC, last year which focuses mainly on women’s nutrition and optimizing metabolism through a combination of in-home metabolic testing and virtual counseling.

What made you interested in being a dietitian?

As early as middle school, I was fascinated with researching vitamins and herbs to help solve my family’s ailments……until I started looking at colleges junior year, I had no idea you could even major in nutrition!

Where do you meet with clients?

Right now, I meet clients in their homes for metabolic testing.  From there, the rest of the support I provide is typically virtual.  I am hoping to have an office space in the future.

How frequently do you meet with clients?

Some clients just want to meet once to have their metabolism tested.  Others want ongoing support, in which case, we meet weekly via phone or zoom.

Do you work with children?

I don’t currently have any private pediatric clients but I have a lot of experience with kids, especially those with food allergies from my work at Double H Ranch.

What is metabolic testing?

Metabolic testing measures the oxygen that the body consumes. Using this measurement the machine calculates a client’s Resting Energy Expenditure (REE), the calories an individual burns at rest. Clinicians can screen for abnormally low metabolic rates, teach energy balance, and accurately pinpoint a person’s calorie needs.  The majority of my clients are shocked to find out that their 1200-1400 calorie “diet” isn’t providing them enough fuel and nutrition and actually has detrimental effects on their metabolism.
