Meet a Dad, Dwayne Killings, Men’s Basketball Coach at UAlbany | Capital District Moms

How long have you lived in the Capital District?

I am originally from Amherst, MA (90 minutes East of Albany) and my wife is from New York City. However, we now call the Capital Region home as I was named the new head men’s basketball coach at UAlbany in March of this year (2021). I spent the last three seasons at Marquette University as the Associate Head Coach. Prior to that I spent two seasons as an assistant coach at University of Connecticut and five seasons at Temple University as an assistant coach (Click here to learn more about Killings’ basketball career).

Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I am blessed to be the father of Alecia (7 years old) and Tristan (4 years old). They are two kids with a lot of energy! I’m excited that my family is finally in Albany full time (as of this week)! I attended UMass Amherst where I met my wife, but got my degree from Hampton University in Virginia. We also consider our team at UAlbany family! We can’t wait until summer training starts in July and we can have our UAlbany family over. We love hosting team gatherings at our home! If I’m not at work or spending time with my family, you can find me at the gym (PWR 518) or out for a ride on my bike.

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
I love to road bike!!! It is the best way to start your day because you can get lost in your thoughts and re-set for the day! I’m looking forward to getting some miles in on my bike around the Capital District.

What is your favorite place to take your kids in the Capital District?
So far we love Buckingham Pond in the City of Albany. It is a great place to take a walk with kids and there is a playground there too! I’m also looking forward to going to the Saratoga Race Track with my family. I think my children will love that experience.

When did you start playing basketball?
I started playing basketball when I was six years old. I instantly fell in love with the game and how it brings people together!

Did you have a favorite basketball player you looked up to as a child?
I was a big fan of Reggie Lewis and Magic Johnson.

Could you tell me a little bit more about your basketball camps?
One of the highlights of the off season is our summer camps! It is so much fun for our staff and players to teach the fundamentals of basketball to kids(Grades K-6)! The energy and excitement is second to none! If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out via email ([email protected]) or phone (708-612-9988).
