Teens need camp too! - Capital District Moms

Summertime gets many of our youth outside and having fun. Many of the camp options in the Capital Region focus on elementary age children. Teens need camp too! Teens at camp socialize and challenge by choice on activities. We would all agree that getting teens away from their phones for 8-9 hours each summer day is a goal to strive for.

The Albany JCC offers a program for teens, entering 6th grade to entering 10th grade from June 30-August 15. Teens have their own yurts for their base of operations and get to assist with planning activities for their group. The Albany JCC Camps offer free swim, a high and low element Ropes Course, a ton of sports, art, dance, and nature activities. Many of these activities allow for that socialization and building confidence that teens need. There are also weekly trips and overnights that the teens love. “My favorite part of last summer was the last week of camp. We went to Lake George for two nights and had a blast camping. The Camp Director was on the trip and we all met as a group on the beach to plan trips for this coming summer. The Camp Director talked about this place the JCC went to years ago called Club Getaway in Connecticut. His description caused all of our eyes to light up. We are going there for 4 nights the third week of summer 2025.” – Aidan K.

How about leadership skill building? The Albany JCC offers the oldest teens to become a Counselor in Training during the camp day. The teens can choose to volunteer with the younger elementary age campers, or they can assist the Camp Specialists as an apprentice. During the summer, there will be a two day American Red Cross Babysitting Course. The teens will learn the business of babysitting, behavior management, and will receive a two year certificate for CPR and First Aid.

What happens after mid August when Teen Camp ends? The Albany JCC offers two weeks of Specialty Camps in late August. For teens, there is Circus Camp with Circus Theatricks, Challenger Soccer, and Capital Region Basketball Boot Camp.
